Chemo #4

When i first started chemo i thought it was going to be a dark, dank room with depressing balding weak people sitting around lifeless...but its not.  Its light, bright and full of chatty people.  Some dont have hair but its not at all what i had pictured in my mind the first time i sat in the waiting room full of anxiety.  The thing that stands out the most are the nurses.  They are all kind hearted, patient women who take time with each and every patient to ask questions and make sure you are as comfortable as possible. 3 out of my 4 visits i've had the pleasure of having nurse Raynham.  The sweetest, nicest human i think i've ever met.  On my 2nd chemo visit she noticed i was wearing an Angels baseball hat and asked if i was into baseball.  When i replied yes she asked if i knew who Grady Sizemore was.  I said yes he plays centerfield for the Indians.  She said his father is sitting right over there would you like to meet him?  So, i was introduced to Grady Sizemores father on my 2nd chemo trip.  Never know who you are going to run into getting chemo at Desert Oncology.  I ran into a gal yesterday who recognized me from my 1st chemo trip who lives in Gilbert.  She asked how i was doing, she saw me wearing a "Gilbert" t-shirt my first time there and struck up a conversation.  There are nothing but nice people at chemo trips on my Thursdays now.  I dont dread chemo, i look forward to it now, its been a positive experience and i think its working.

I woke up this Friday morning after chemo dose #4 and looked in the mirror and there were little dark hairs all over my white t-shirt.  I ran and got my Mom and said look at this!!!   I grabbed a clump of hair off my head and let the little dark hairs fall on the bathroom counter top.  We gazed down at ALL the hair...IT STARTED!!!  I'm finally losing my hair!!  4 chemo doses later!!  I was beginning to think it wasn't going to happen.  So, now i will prepare for baldness.  How do you prepare to lose your hair??  Good thing i have lots of baseball hats!

My friends who have gone through this have all opted to shave their heads when the hair started coming out rather than deal with it clump by clump. The upside is that when it grows back, it grows back thicker - so short term baldness will just mean long term thickness...

Sorry it happened, tho, it's gotta be an eye opener.

Love ya bald or with hair,
    Linda

Hats or no hats, it ain't no thing Sistah! Baldness can be an attractive thing in so many ways, you'll have em beating your door down!
A couple days ago, long before this entry was even a dream (and I just couldn't bring myself to ask you if it was happening) I decided to shave my head in honor of you and my other friends in this fight, as well as in memory of the people I have lost. I have several volunteers lining up to do the job and the gesture is taking on a life of it's own. I hope to be able to afford to tattoo a pink ribbon with the courage, hope and faith saying along with "In loving memory, honor and support of...". So, the moral of this story O-wie is, by the time I am able to get there to see you, I will be bald as well. This is not an impulsive act but rather a well thought out display of support. I have actually wanted to do this several times before now to support others in the same or similar situation, this time however, it will happen. So Sistah O, you will not be alone! Maybe others will follow suit (if they're as nuts as I am =:o)!) and people with hair will be the funny looking people, LOL! I only hope I don't look like Uncle Fester from the Addams Family TV show, nonetheless..... I'm ready to find out.
Just think of how much faster I can get ready for work in the morning...lmao. Mom doesn't know yet, I think I'll surprise her!!!
    BRING ON THE BUZZER!!!!!
    Love ya O-wie,
    Jodie

P.S. I'm glad that the chemo experience has been a positive one, that is so important for so many reasons. Maybe if you're feeling well enough towards the latter treatments, I'll come then and go with you to support you through your treatment and to share the bald gesture with others who may be struggling with their own hair loss.

The deed is done, much to the disappointment of my Mother....oh well, she'll get over it. I figure it's a small sacrifice I can make to ensure others around me in this fight feel comfortable....I sent ya a couple pics from the event the other day O.
I hope tonight is the Mother of all success at The Door.
      Love ya O,
      Jodie

Maybe you should try something totally different like long and curly LOL Glad to hear things are going good and look forward to seeing you Friday night.

      Hey VAl,
if you do something like this again can ya give notice with more warning. I would have driven there today to attend but didn't have enough time to manipulate my work schedule. With more time I have more of a chance to pull it off.
      Thank you,
      Jodie
